Elizabeth Lebon’s work consists essentially of typescripts typed on a typewriter. The Book of Walls, published in 2023, was written in 2014, at a time when the artist was exploring the possibilities of creating her own small-format book. Several small books form a whole with the titles: The Book of Walls, I am Sure I Have Left Someone Out, Free, What is Shivering, Concrete Fluidity, The Contact Lens and the Typewriter.
Elizabeth Lebon’s poetry is sonorous, the scansion leading to a play on meaning, combined with the repetition of axioms. The leporello The Book of Walls, in the form of three mobile mini-paravents, presents graphic edifices made of serif letters, reminiscent of Carl Andre’s installations and sculptures.
What is shivering? recalls of the work of Ulises Carrión in an allegorical and minimalist way. These six books are landscapes of signs, an empty opening in a typographic rectangle, a space created on rhythm and architectural form. A play on the pages and formats of the book, a play on the sign, the eroticism of a letter, of a collection of words, scrambled, superimposed, creating a thickness.
Something that we grasp and that escapes us, an in-between state, a state of the body, a state of writing. In its architectural form, it suggests a Constructivist apartment, its openings, its simplicity.
Various Small Books is a poetic work by Elizabeth Lebon that continues her research into the typewriter and small formats.
