Claudia de la Torre – Books Tower

Books are not stable. They come apart. They are cut, folded, rewritten, misplaced, duplicated. They carry traces of what they were a nd hints of what they might become. This exhibition gathers works that move within this space, between construction and deconstruction, where the book is not a fixed object but a shifting form. Palimpsest appears here as a reunion. Copies that once circulated separately are brought together for the first time. Nothing is original, or everything is, depending on where you enter. The work does not settle. It accumulates.
Fragments continue in Aktualisierte Ausgabe (Fischer Variations). A lexicon is taken apart and placed into a box. Loose sections, endlessly rearrangeable. Titles begin to slip. Sentences form and dissolve again, like a language trying to remember itself.
In Knaurs Meets Fischer, one book enters another. Images migrate, attach themselves, overwrite. A lexicon becomes host and guest at once. Knowledge is not expanded but entangled.
With Rheita, the gesture is quieter. Carbon paper, once used to make faithful copies, refuses precision. Through folding and pressure, it produces shifts, shadows, slight misalignments. A copy is never only a copy. It drifts.
At the center, a flag: Dear reader, Do read. Two sides, two movements. An address and a suggestion. A response to Ulises Carrión, but also a reversal, or perhaps a continuation. Depending on where you stand in the space.
Books are Bridges unfolds differently each time. Here, in French, it gathers voices that complete a sentence without closing it.
“Books are bridges between __ and __.” The pages remain unbound.
They can be reordered, recombined. Connections appear, disappear, reappear elsewhere.
A book that is never finished, only temporarily arranged.
In The Waves, language thins out. Color is extracted from Virginia Woolf’s text, one mention at a time. Each page holds a single color. Sequence replaces narrative. Reading becomes looking. This movement extends into painting.
The first chapter is translated into monochrome surfaces. Not illustration, but displacement. A passage from text into image, from time into space.
Across all works, something is taken apart, not to be destroyed, but to be set in motion again. Construction and deconstruction are not opposites here.
They happen at once. A book is built by undoing itself.
